Binary is Easy

When there are only two perceived options, choice is binary.

The famous George Bush, “either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists” rhetoric.

It’s an easy call to action to create division, and ensure your call to action is followed. If there are only two sides, one has to be good, so one obviously bad.

Nuance, grey area, and complex requires time and patience — attention.

Time is at a premium. Click Through Rate, 15 sec Insta stories, TikTok, et al. all competing for “screen time” — attention.

Capitalism’s business model is about speed. Technology. Faster, stronger, better. More profits. More growth. More more MOAR!

Complex requires time. Capitalism inherently roots out complexity through competition for our attention. Unchecked Capitalism is a zero sum race to binary choice. Simplicity.

Ask yourself, who truly benefits from simplicity. From seemingly simple — binary — choices. Who truly benefits from our attention being saturated?
